MWD Changes Smart Timer Equipment Rebates, while Performance Based Incentives Become More Active.


MARCH 10, 2009, SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA -- The Metropolitan Water District Rebate Program has been revised to allocate rebate funds based on the total number of valves for a project, instead of total irrigated acreage. This change will potentially reduce the amount of rebate funds available per project. Previously, MWD projects were eligible for rebates of $630 per irrigated acre, whereas now projects are limited to $25 per irrigation valve.

Despite this revision in rebates, there is still hope for projects that can actually achieve real, sustainable water savings. The MWD Performance Incentive Program remains active and has been a proven source of reliable water savings incentive funds over the years. Water2Save remains a leader in obtaining performance-based incentive funds and has allocated over $310,000 of MWD incentive funds for its customers to date. Likewise, while working with the LADWP T.A.P program, Water2Save has been able to deliver over $200,000 in incentive funds to existing customers throughout Los Angeles County.

To illustrate how the change will affect available rebate funds, here is an example of a typical HOA applying for the MWD rebate program before and after the change.

The project will involve replacing 3 controllers that operate a total of 72 valves, irrigating 12.9 acres. Previously, the project would be eligible for $630 per irrigated acre through the MWD rebate program. This works out to approximately $8,100 for the 12.9 acres of irrigated landscape for the project. However, with the rebate program revision, the property is now only eligible for $25 per valve, or $1,800 of rebate funds project-wide. Because of this change, this project will now receive $6,300 less than was previously available.

With this potential reduction in rebate funds, performance based incentive programs become more attractive for properties that can continuously save large amounts of water. With a proven track record and hard-earned respect within performance based programs, Water2Save will continue to lead the way in distributing crucial incentive funds in any type of economic climate.
